People have long wondered why Adolf Hitler -- the world's most famous symbol of evil and brutality -- did what he did and why he was cheered on by millions of Germans, most of whom claimed to be religious. The questions surrounding his use of brutality has intrigued scholars for decades.
Richard Weikart, professor of history at California State University in Stanislaus, believes that Hitler's consistent -- albeit pernicious -- world view contributed in great measure to his descent into evil.
So, he asks, what accounts for the intensity of evil in Hitler and his Nazi regime? Is it a manifestation of human depravity lurking inside us all, or perhaps an outburst of the human lust for power that we all share? Are we often too quick to distance ourselves from Hitler, Stalin, and other ogres of their ilk, as though WE would never -- even with unlimited power at our disposal -- oppress or harm a fellow human being?
Many "ordinary Germans" (and even many foreigners) assisted Hitler, after all, in carrying out his atrocities. He didn't act alone.
Weikart concludes: First of all, Hitler embraced a world view that denied any personal God or transcendent moral standards. Instead, the cosmos and human history were products of an impersonal fate, providence or destiny. This view of emptiness of the cosmos was reflected in his personal life, as Hitler had no friendships or close relationships with anyone, not even his mistress Eva Braun. For him, the German people existed only as an abstraction. Even during the war, he never visited hospitals or injured troops or bombed cities. He lacked empathy with real people, and he even criticized those who allowed sympathy to influence their political decisions.
It is believed he murdered 20 million innocents -- Jews, Catholics, Romanians, essentially targeted groups or anyone who stood in his way.

The goal of The Global Organization of Democracies is to spread the knowledge to the entire world that unlimited power kills. In other words, to achieve power, governments (and those who run autocratic governments) engage in mass murder in order to maintain their power.
We recognize this unfallible and proven truth: Power kills!
As a result, we have developed our Never Again! strategies to convince the world -- once and for all -- that mass murder is completely and totally unacceptable in civilized society today. We will lead the fight against genocide, democide and politicide -- in fact, all types of mass murder -- through our team of consultants, statesmen, volunteers and fact-finding commissions throughout the world.
Our fight is based on empirical data well-documented and accepted across all academic disciplines, but virtually unknown to the average citizen. The bottom line? The consolidation of power is a proven catastrophe for the human species.
